SKIP BINS

Do you service builders?

Yes

Can I get a skip delivered or picked up on Sunday?

No

How long can I keep the skip bin?

The standard hire period of our skip bins is 7 days. However, should you require an early pick up or an extension of your hire period please contact us so this can be arranged.

How much does it cost to hire a skip bin?

It depends on the waste type, the size of the skip bin and your particular requirements. Give us a call today and we'll help you out and provide you with a quote.

What can’t go in the skip bin?

Hazardous waste cannot be placed in the skip bin. This includes paints, solvents, liquids, Asbestos, Gas bottles, Putrescible waste (food, nappies). All liquids (paint, oil, thinners etc). To dispose of any of these materials you need to contact your local council for removal of these materials. Please note: Asbestos is strongly prohibited, if found in our bins fines will apply up to $200 and the product returned to your property.

What skip bin type do I need?

This is all dependent on the type of rubbish that is in the skip bin. The different types of rubbish are are "General Waste" which is anything involved with a general cleanup around the house. "Clean fill / Hard fill" skip bin: Use this type of bin if you have any concrete, soil, sand, clay, rocks, rubble, bricks, sand, asphalt, ceramic tiles. "Green Waste" skip bin: Use this type of bin if you have any grass, leaves, tree trimmings, small branches and other organic materials. Only use a "Soil / Dirt" skip bin, if you have 100% pure soil/dirt (no turf or contaminants). No other waste can be mixed in this bin, additional charges will apply if other waste is placed in this bin.

When and how do I pay for the skip bin?

Skip bins are paid for at drop off. We accept payment by Visa or Mastercard credit cards, cash and cheque. Any additional charges for excess tip fees will need to be added to the cost of the service. Please discuss your payment preference before delivery.

How high can I fill the skip bin?

All skip bins are to be level loaded and filled to the rim only, without any materials or items overhanging the top to prevent spillage whilst being transported. This is very important as it is illegal to transport overloaded bins and your bin may not be collected if it is over full.

What do I do with hazardous chemicals?

You cannot put any hazardous waste into the skip bins. To dispose of this you need to contact your local council. Hazardous chemicals include Solvents, Paints, Asbestos, Acids, Laboratory Waste, Oils, Grease traps etc.

Will they be able to get up my driveway?

We generally fit down most standard driveways.

How soon can you deliver my skip bin?

Same day service is available but ideally we prefer 24 hours notice to get the bin out to you.

Do your bins have doors or ramps?

Skip bins 2, 3 and 4 cubic metres do not have doors or ramps. All hook bins 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 35 cubic metres do.

Where can I place the skip bin?

The skip bin can be placed anywhere on your property, provided there is access for our truck. Bins are not allowed to be placed on the road or footpath where they may obstruct other traffic, without a council permit.

Can I move the skip bin?

No. The operator will endeavour to place the bin in your requested position. Moving the bin in most instances prevents the recovery of the bin and will result in extra charges for yourself and having to empty the bin out before it is moved again. Sometimes the skip bin cannot be placed where you want. This may be due to overhanging trees, power lines or sloping ground. Moving the bin requires special lifting apparatus. The bin needs to be lifted evenly to prevent damage to the bin and the lifting equipment on the truck. Moving the bin with cars or bobcats damages the bins and could potentially cause the bin to collapse on pick up.

Can you pick my skip bin up earlier?

Yes, if you require your skip bin to be picked earlier than the 7 day period we can definitely book that in. Please contact us to arrange the early pick up.

What should I do before my skip bin arrives?

Make sure you have access for the truck. Advise your contractors to leave room for the delivery of the bin and the pickup of the bin when full. Make sure there is no overhanging trees or power lines (7 metres clearance required to comply with OH&S). Make sure your car, boast or caravan is moved if needed prior to the bin being delivered and that car keys are available for vehicles on site if needed. Make sure you have not placed your rubbish where your skip bin is to be placed.

What happens to my waste after it has been collected?

At Phillip Island Waste and Recycling we are committed to protecting our environment. All waste is sorted on site and approximately 70% of all waste that enters our skip bins is recycled and turned into recycled products such as soil, fill sand, aggregates, woodchip, cardboard, steel, plasterboard and plastic.

How do I safely dispose of dangerous and hazardous items?

Contact your local council. Most have a free pick up or drop off point for ratepayers. Some waste fill facilities have free drop off for asbestos on the last Sunday of each month as a community service. This is in addition to free drop off of used paint, oil and herbicides etc. Please contact your local Waste facility or council for more details.

What are your opening times?

Our opening times are Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, and Saturday 8am – 1pm

Who is responsible for the skip bin?

You the Hirer. If your employee’s or neighbours fill the skip bin on your behalf you are responsible for making sure it is filled to our requirements. Should you find green waste mixed through your rubbish or hazardous materials placed in the bin you must rectify this before filling the bin any further. Additional charges will be passed on to the hirer at the prevailing rates for bins that have been moved, overfilled, filled incorrectly (contaminated with green waste) or contain hazardous materials. By accepting delivery of our bin you acknowledge and agree to this condition of use.

What can go in the skip bin?

General Waste (furniture, appliances, office waste, plastic, cardboard), Green Waste (tree branches, timber, garden waste, grass clippings) Concrete, tiles and bricks. Heavy waste (soil, rocks, pavers) Soil and dirt

A machine operator is filling my bin - What do I need to know?

You are responsible for the hire of the bin. Make sure the machines operator DOES NOT: 1) Move the bin 2) Overfill the bin 3) Try to hide material in the bin that is excluded from our hire conditions. Machines operators quite often do things they would not do with their own trucks. Machine operators almost always fill the bin with greens first or try to hide material they know cannot be disposed of in a skip bin. Please advise them of your legal and contractual obligations. Machine operators tip at the same landfill facility we do and know the law – but most will try to bluff you with “she’ll be right” or “we do this all the time”. As the hirer of the skip bin you are the one responsible for any additional fees incurred. Please make sure your machine operator is aware of your skip bin hire conditions.

What size skip bin will I need for my job?

In general 1 cubic metre is the equivalent of one 6x4 trailer load or approximately four 240lt wheelie bins. If you have eight trailer loads, you will require an 8 cubic metre bin; if you only have one trailer load you will need a 2 cubic metre bin or skip bag.

Are there any additional charges?

Additional fees and charges are payable in addition to the bin hire fee as listed in our “terms and conditions”. For most of our clients there is nothing to worry about. However, for those who conceal hazardous or controlled waste, overfill the bin or not make the bin available for pick up or delivery there will be additional charges for any circumstance beyond our control.

4. If you live in a area where there is plenty of trees or power lines, please ensure there is the required clearance to leave the bin safely
